These days, many women are single moms. This fact presents special considerations which many do not give enough thought. If you are a single mom, you can avoid unnecessary problems and have a much more fulfilling social life if you put some careful thought into it in advance.
Unlike in the past, many of today's single moms are not looking for a father-figure for their children. This means they are also not looking at the dating arena as a place to instantly gain a husband. The general consensus is for dating to be a wonderful experience-- or a variety of wonderful experiences-- focused on having a good time and getting to know people.
If you are a single mom who relates to dating in this manner, there are two essential points which you absolutely must keep in mind. First, it is essential for you to keep your children out of your social life. While this may sound contradictory to opinions which you may have heard elsewhere, the fact is that bringing your dates home to meet your children, or, even worse, including your kids in your social activities, is unfair and unhealthy. Not only is it unnecessary for your children to "get to know" the men you date, a child's natural need to bond can result in many difficulties. If you do not intend for a specific man to remain in your life permanently, do not make dating a "family" affair.
Second, it is important to be wary of a man who expresses "too much too soon" interest regarding your children. If a man whom you have just met looks at you and your kids as "a package deal," move on immediately. Although he could very well be dangerous, he is at least expressing that he has trouble relating to women as individuals. This is not advice that you can afford to dismiss.
While dating can be a serious matter, you do not want to take all of the fun out of it by being too serious. After all, having a good time is the main point. Asking fun questions to get to know someone will ensure that you will both have a good time and get to know each other. If you keep your family life and your career out of the picture, you can focus on your date. "Of all the women you could be out with, how did I get to be the lucky one?" is a good, light-hearted start.
The best way a single mom can have a successful dating life is to decide in advance whether she is hoping to find a future mate or to simply enjoy the company of nice men and positive social experiences. "What are you looking for from dating?" is a good question to ensure that the man you are interested in has the same goal as you.
