The First Step To Getting Anything You Want in Life

All the successful people I have met in life have got one thing in common; the desire to be more than they are and the absolute hate of what is less. Therefore for one to achieve any form of success, he must badly desire it and badly hate his current status. I am talking about A BURNING DESIRE. All success, be it academic, financial, relationship etc, begins with a burning desire. You must have a burning desire. It is what keeps you going in your life. If your desire for success is not strong enough, do you think that you can achieve it?

A burning desire is a will that is strong enough to propel you into taking whatever you need to achieve whatever you want. This is the main recipe of success that most people lack. If your desire is not strong enough, you will be just like everybody else, living a mediocre life and never have the will to improve your life.

Everything man creates or acquires, begins in the form of DESIRE, desire is taken on the first lap of its journey, from the abstract to the concrete, into the workshop of the IMAGINATION, where PLANS for its transition are created and organized. Just like DESIRE, has made very many people millionaires, I believe it can make you a success, a cut above the ordinary, when applied to your academic life.

You have to desire to change your grades, desire to get better marks and desire to be at the top. You see, one thing is true, nothing can happen on its own when you are not involved. All those poor grades you want to change, they will not change unless you badly want to change them.

Think of it this way; think of a rotund, overweight man who wants to reduce his body weight and shape his body. I give this example because I work out in the gym and I work with such people who want to change their bodies for the better. The first thing that we tell them is that the exercises involved are hard and that they require someone with commitment and determination to persistently carry them out. However, the rewards are extremely sweet for one who persists.

Guess what happens? Of all the guys and ladies who come to gym for weight loss programs and body shaping, only a handful make it to the gains they want! The reason, I came to know, is that those who fail don't have a strong burning desire to change like those who succeed.

These people who succeed to attain their new look have got an above average desire. This is the thing. They badly hate the way they look that they cannot stand looking at them selves. They are therefore willing to pay the price to move out of that state. They are willing to endure the pain, the hardship and the discipline in order to attain what they want. In other words, because of the burning desire they have, they consider what they go through as nothing compared to what they are looking forward to. And that is DESIRE.

Like wise, for you to make it to the top, you must desire being at the top. You must badly want to be at the top. You must badly nurture your want to the extent that you can do anything possible, without hurting others in the process, to get to the top. Note that this is not wishful thinking, this is a genuine desire. You must want it more than anything else. You must genuinely want to be excellent in your academics than you want anything else. Your desire should be genuine and definite.

In desiring academic excellence, you must want nothing less. You must leave no room for retreat. You should focus on that and let it be that. The rule for success is you have to win to be excellent or perish! Just like 50 Cent, get excellent or die trying. And the mother of all success; the genesis of all excellence, is a genuine burning desire to be excellent. Not to settle for anything less.

A long while ago, a great warrior faced a situation which made it necessary for him to make a decision which insured his success on the battlefield. He was about to send his armies against a powerful foe, whose men outnumbered his own. He loaded his soldiers into the boats, sailed to the enemy's territory, unloaded soldiers and equipment, and then gave the order to burn the ships that had carried them.

This man was the Spanish explorer Hernan Cortes, who conquered Mexico in 1519. He faced overwhelming odds, tens of thousands of Aztec warriors against his 400 Soldiers. When his troops began to mutiny, Cortes ordered all but one of his 11 ships to scuttled and sunk so there was no avenue of escape.

Addressing his men before the first battle, he said,

"You see the boats going up in smoke. That means that we cannot leave these shores alive unless we win! We now have no choice-we win or perish! They won.

Every person who wins in any undertaking must be willing to burn his ships and cut all sources of retreat. Only by so doing can one be sure of maintaining that state of mind known as a BURNING DESIRE TO WIN, essential to success.

Wishing will not bring success. But desiring success with a state of the mind that it becomes an obsession, then planning definite ways and means to acquire success, and backing those plans with persistence which does not recognize failure, will bring academic excellence.
